Home Cinema

Ever since we moved into this home and I started sharing our personal design and renovation story online, there was always one room in the house that people would get so excited for! I didn’t show it too often, because it was a project for another time, but our home cinema room always got people so excited! We hadn’t touched the space since we moved in, and it had turned into a catchall for different things around the house that didn’t have a place, but hell, it’s super cool to have a movie theatre in your home and we finally decided that it was time to make the space ours! Here is what our home cinema looked like to start!

Being a home cinema, I knew exactly the vibe I was going for! I wanted something lux and over the top and very art deco feeling! I wanted coming downstairs to watch a movie to feel like a luxury experience! I messed around with a lot of colors, but knew I wanted something dark and moody to keep in line with the cinema experience! The theatre was filled with theatre chairs, which were retro and fun, but it was really important to me for it to feel a bit softer and “loungier.” Somewhere that we could sprawl out and I could lay on Nates lap and force him to pet my head. lol. Couches were definitely a must! After taking into consideration functionality and my cinema vibe, this is the mood board I came up with for the space!

Andddddddd, here is what that mood board and a lot of hard work turned our little home cinema into!

Yes, she is stunning and an actual dream come true!! Now to get into the details! First things first, couches! This to me was the most important decision for this space! There were platforms already built into this space, so I needed to find some comfy and aesthetically pleasing sofas that would fit on our platforms! I knew I wanted velvet and I knew I wanted dark and a little glam. With no further ado, I Introduce you to my beautiful trio of black velvet Adams Sofas from Castlery!

We obviously wanted something that fit our aesthetic, but also was comfortable! This trio is super comfy as well as a bit firmer so that they will keep their cushion shape over the years! I love the black velvet [aired with the gold legs! Timeless but also amazing quality and absolutely perfect for this space!

With the sofas being dark and having decided on a dark paint color, (Space Black by Behr) I really wanted to incorporate something contrasting around the bottom half of the room to really make the couches pop! One of my very favorite wallpaper brands is Divine Savages! They have this amazing collection of papers and products called “Crane Fonda” that I’ve been wanting to use foreverrrrrrr! This was the perfect opportunity and I decided to go with their Crane Fonda paper in Charcoal! I’ve worked with many different wallpapers over the years, and I just can’t say enough good things about the quality of their paper! Never any problems installing and always such a dream once it’s finished! It truly added the perfect touch of deco in this space and I love the way it looks with the dark walls!

Another element in the theater that was really important to me was lighting! Not just the perfect theatre lighting, but something really fun and bold and deco that would really set of the space! I have seen Stray Dog Designs lighting in so many different homes and projects and felt like this would be the perfect opportunity to incorporate some of their amazing designer pieces in our own home! I decided to go with the Helen sconces for our cinema! I knew I wanted something white that would really pop off of the black walls, and when I found the Helen and how well it complimented our Divine Savages wallpaper, I just knew they were the ones! There has been a lot of debate on shades or no shades and I’m honestly undecided! I’ll probably end up getting some eventually, but for now I love the laid back feeling of them with no shades! No one worry, the bulbs are special dimmable bulbs and we have them permanently set low to add the perfect theatre ambience!

One of the very last things I sourced for the space was art! I originally had envisioned some fun and colorful vintage art deco pieces on the walls, but as the space was starting to finish up, I was really overwhelmed by the idea of adding a bunch of color on the walls! I decided that I wanted to go with black and whites but not your typical home theatre “movie” art. I love sculpture and to me nothing is more classic or refined than ancient Greek sculpture and that became my art theme for this space! I was able to source my prints via download off of Esty and I knew I wanted some fun and bold framing! I’m a huge fan of Framebridge and have used them all over my home and for client projects as well! Every time I order, It’s always top notch and exceeds all expectations and this time was no different! I love how I can customize every aspect of my project and all online! I went ahead and picked their Paris frames which are the perfect shade of blush pink! I originally had white mats, but last minute I decided I wanted to do something a little different and fun and I went with the black! The combination of my black and white sculpture prints with black mats and pink frames is a dream! Exactly what I had envisioned when it came to this space and Framebridge always makes it so easy! I really procrastinated on ordering art because I just couldn’t make up my mind, but once I did, my framed art was on my doorstep a few days later! So fast and easy and convenient! Stay tuned because I’m going to be doing a blogpost on my Framebridge art and how to order with downloaded prints!

This home theatre was actually and addition that was built onto the home! If you aren’t aware, this is my childhood home! Back in the day, my parents had this home cinema added on to fufil my dads dream of having his own home cinema. Well, we bought the house and it’s my home cinema now!!! also, shoutout to mom and dad for coming over and helping us with electrical and drywall work!! Anyways, even though this space was built specifically as a theatre, the window was added so that it could also pass as another bedroom for real-estate purposes! We went ahead and blacked out the window with some velvet curtains and then I decided to turn the ledge space into a little wine bar! You can’t have a movie theatre without spirits, and this was the perfect use of this small little space!

If you watch my stories then you know that our flooring was a bit of back and forth between Nate and I! We had to make a lot of upgrades on the technical end of this theatre; I.E. sound systems, projection systems, tv, etc. and those things weren’t cheap! I wanted to save some money and go with some basic carpet squares, but apparently it was really important and a non negotiable to Nate that we had flooring soft enough to nap on. lollllll. We ended up going carpet shopping and sourced a beautiful vintage looking mauve carpet with the thickest padding available and I’m not mad at it! It cost us a bit more than I wanted to spend, but in the end it was so worth it and there really is nothing like good plushy carpet under your feet. (or under your whole body if your Nate. lol) And yes, there have already been many carpet naps had by him in here!

Alright friends! I think that about wraps it up! keep scrolling for some links and thanks so much for following along in our home journey! I’m excited to announce our next project! In the mean time, you can catch me down here drinking champagne and playing Mario on the switch!

Love you all!
